hashima-Gunkanjima

Hashima is the island in Nagasaki-shi, Nagasaki (old Takashima-cho). It was conspicuous for a submarine coal mine from Meiji Period to Showa Period. It’s a desert island after an islander leaves the island with a closure in 1974.

6.3 hectares of area and about 1.2 kilometers of outskirts. Because silhouette of island was similar to a battleship “Tosa”, I came to be called “Gunkanjima”. Much in coal mine facilities is dissolved, and only the high-rise housing crowd of concrete who has died tells the past image.
